School-based Apprenticeships

School-based Apprenticeships are available at the ATC WA in the following trades:

Trades offered will depend on industry need and minimum enrolment requirements being met

A School-based Apprenticeship (SbA) is a mix of academic, vocational and technical education and paid employment where a student’s school studies, training and work all fit together. Young people can achieve their Western Australian Certificate of Education (Year 12 Graduation) and commence an apprenticeship on a part-time basis!

School-based Apprenticeships are available to students aged 15 – 19 years and over who have successfully completed Year 10 or 11.

Benefits of a School-based Apprenticeship include:

  • Students are given a head start in their trade career and gain a competitive edge when searching for future employment
  • Students earn an income and move towards achieving a nationally recognised trade qualification – while still at school!
  • Students are provided with important hands on skills and valuable industry experience
  • The option for future study remains open. Once fully qualified, students can further their education to enhance qualifications or progress their career
  • Students are taught valuable business knowledge and skills so they can go on to own their own business

Senior First Aid Training

Senior First Aid Training provides valuable life support skills for the workplace, at home or out and about.

Duration: 2 days (15 hours)

  • 2nd - 3rd of August, 2011
  • 6th - 7th of September, 2011
  • 5th - 5th of October, 2011
  • 1st - 2nd of November, 2011
  • 6th - 7th of October, 2011

Venue: ATC WA Armadale Campus

Cost: $175.00 + GST

Pre-requisites: Nil

Dress: Comfortable clothing with closed in shoes

Course: Senior First Aid (HLTFA301B Apply First Aid)

  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Fractures and dislocations
  • Head, chest and spinal injuries
  • Fainting and unconsciousness
  • Bandaging techniques
  • Poisoning, bites, stings and much more!

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that measures your non-formal and informal learning to determine the extent to which you have achieved required outcomes for partial or total completion of a formal Qualification. Through this process should any gap training be identified the College can develop a plan to provide this training.

 The Australian Trades College WA can help you obtain any of the following:

 Certificate III qualifications

  • AUR303405 Certificate III in Automotive Mechanical Technology
  • CPC30108 Certificate III in Bricklaying/ Blocklaying
  • CPC32008 Certificate III in Carpentry and Joinery
  • LMF32109 Certificate III in Cabinet Making
  • MEM30305 Certificate III in Engineering (Fabrication Trade)

 Certificate II qualifications (predominately for D&T teachers)

  • MEM20105 Certificate II in Engineering
  • LMF20309 Certificate II in Furniture Making
  • CPC20208 Certificate II in Construction Pathways
  • CPC20108 Certificate II in Construction
  • AUR20705 Certificate II in Automotive Mechanical
  • AUR20505 Certificate II in Automotive Vehicle Servicing

 As part of the RPL process you will need to complete an application form and provide evidence to demonstrate your level of experience.

Balance Wheels & Tyres

This course is designed to provide candidates with the knowledge and practical skills to effectively balance wheels and tyres. This course is accompanied by a workplace task and assessment checklist, providing further evidence to attain accreditation by the actual unit of competency - AURT217606A BALANCE WHEELS AND TYRES on a Statement of Attainment.

Pre requistites: A basic understanding of light vehicle fundamentals

Eligbibilty: All candidates must be employed in an automotive field where they will be able to demonstrate these skills for on the job assessment with their employer.

Topics covered:

  • OH&S regulations/requirements, equipment, material and personal safety requirements
  • Dangers of working with balancing equipment
  • Balancing procedures
  • On road operating characteristics of wheel and tyres and associated components
  • Types and layout of service/ repair manuals (hard copy & electronic)
  • Use of hand tools and specialised equipment
  • Inspection procedures
  • Enterprise quality procedures
  • Work organisation & planning
  • Performing Balancing
  • Completing documentaton and service history documents

Assessment:

  • Theoretical test, practical assessment, verbal questioning
  • On the job (workplace) checklist (required to attain full competence)
  • Pass rate required on all assessments

Duration: 1 Full Day 8.30 – 4.30 + workplace assessment tasks

Wheel Alignment

This course is designed to provide candidates with knowledge and practical skills to efficiently undertake wheel alignment operations to industry standard, in a work environment. This course is accompanied with a workplace task and assessment checklist, providing further evidence to attain accreditation by the actual unit of competency AURTL317108A CARRY OUT WHEEL ALIGNMENT OPERATIONS on a Statement of Attainment.

Pre requisites: A basic understanding of light vehicle fundamentals.

Eligibility: All candidates must be employed in an automotive field where they will be able to demonstrate these skills for on the job assessment with their employer.

Topics covered:

  • OH&S regulations/requirements, equipment, material and personal safety requirements
  • Operating principles of steering geometry and wheel alignment
  • Wheel alignment procedures
  • Relationships between fault symptoms and component defects
  • Frame alignment checks
  • Wheel alignment system types and their construction
  • Use of measuring tools and testing equipment
  • Use of hand tools and specialised equipment
  • Pre-check procedures
  • Enterprise quality procedures
  • Work organisation and planning processes
  • Carrying out wheel alignment prechecks
  • Performing vehicle wheel alignment
  • Completing documentation and service history documents

 Assessment:

  • Theoretical test, Practical assessment, Verbal questioning
  • On the job (Workplace) checklist - (required to attain full unit of Competence)
  • Pass rate on all assessments is required

Duration: 1 Full Day 8.30 – 4.30 + workplace assessment tasks

Inspect and Service Braking Systems (Light Vehicles)

This course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills they need to efficiently and safely undertake brake system inspection and repair operations to an industry standard in a workplace environment. This course is accompanied with a workplace task and assessment checklist providing further evidence to attain accreditation by the actual unit competency AUR210170A INSPECT & SERVICE BRAKING SYSTEMS.

Pre requisites: A basic understanding of light vehicle fundamentals

Eligibility: All candidates must be employed in an automotive field where they will be able to demonstrate these skills for an on the job assessment with their employer.

Topics covered:

  • OH&S regulations/requirements, equipment, material and personal safety requirements
  • Operating principals of hydraulically operated disc and drum brakes
  • Brake inspection and reporting procedures
  • Braking adjusting
  • Measuring brake components (disc pads, shoes & rotors)
  • Replacing worn or damaged brake components
  • Carry out brake fluid bleeding
  • Use of measuring tools
  • Enterprise quality procedures
  • Work organisation and planning processes
  • Completing documentation and service history documents

Assessment:

  • Theoretical test, practical assessment, verbal questioning
  • On the job (workplace) checklist
  • Pass rate required on all assessments

Duration: 3-full days, 8:30am-4:30pm (plus workplace assessment)

Course Dates:

  • 24th - 26th of August, 2011
  • 21st - 23rd of September, 2011
  • 19th - 21st of October, 2011
  • 16th - 18th of November, 2011

Cost: $750.00 + GST

Inspect and Service Steering Systems (Light Vehicle)

This Course is designed to provide candidates with the knowledge and practical skills to efficiently carry out the service of suspension systesms and associated components in an automotive retail, service and/or repair context.

Pre requisites: A basic understanding of light vehicle fundabmentals

Eligibility: All candidates must be employed in an automotive field where they will be able to demonstrate these skills for on the job assessment with their employer

Topics covered:

  • OH&S regulations/requirements, equipment, material and personal safety requirements
  • Operating principals of steering Systems
  • Steering inspection and reporting procedures
  • Rack & Pinion steering systems
  • Steering box & Linkage steering systems
  • Replace worn or damaged steering components
  • Use of measuring tools and testing equipment
  • Use of hand and power tools
  • Enterprise quality procedures
  • Work organisation and planning processes

Assessment:

  • Theoretical test, practical assessment, verbal questioning
  • On the job (workplace) checklist
  • Pass rate required on all assessments

Duration: 3-full days (8:30am - 4:30pm) + worksite assessment task

Venue Hire

The Australian Trades College WA has facilities for hire suitable for the delivery of trade training, short-courses, conferences, board meetings and seminars.

Our facilities are available after 4:30pm Monday – Friday and on weekends as required. With sufficient notice, arrangements can be made to accommodate events outside of these time frames.

Free parking is available at both the Maddington and Armadale facilities.

To maintain building security rooms will be opened and closed by ATC WA staff members at the agreed times.
