Kick Start Program

2011 ATC WA and ATC Group Training commenced a trial of an exciting new model for school based pre-apprenticeships.

 The program is called Kickstart SAL:

  • Kickstart, because it is aligned to the Commonwealth Government’s Kickstart apprenticeship initiative, and
  • SAL, because it is based on the best aspects of the School Apprenticeship Link program.

Kickstart SAL is funded by the Commonwealth Government, and administered by the Western Australian Department of Training and Workforce Development.  The 2011/2012 pilot program provides 400 places across Western Australia.

Following a competitive tender in 2010, ATC Group Training was awarded 90 places for each of the 2 years of the pilot.  We are pretty proud of the trust that this allocation demonstrates.

Key aspects of the program include:

  • Kickstart SAL is managed by a Group Training Organisation, in partnership with a school and a Registered Training Organisation;
  • Students remain at school and undertake year 11 and 12;
  • Students commence a Certificate II pre-apprenticeship program in a traditional trades on the State’s skills shortage list;
  • Student pre-apprentices complete 200 hours of work experience in industry;
  • Students complete their Certificate II pre-apprenticeship prior to commencing an apprenticeship;
  • Students are indentured as a school based apprentice for the remainder of the time they are at school; and
  • Following school graduation, student apprentices become full time apprentices, and continue as full time apprentices to trade completion.

Sound familiar?  We think Kickstart SAL fits neatly within the successful model developed at the Australian Trades College WA.

ATC WA and ATC Group Training are committed to making Kickstart SAL work for the young people who are our students, and for our Industry partners.
