The Australian Trades College WA is like no other senior secondary College in Western Australia!

Our College provides academic and trade training under one roof giving you the chance to complete your year 11 and 12 studies and commence your trade training at the same!

Eligibility

Any school-aged person who has completed Year 10 or 11 can apply for a position at the College. People over the age of 19 are generally not eligible for this program but other training opportunities may exist for them at ATC WA. Visa restrictions may also apply.

 Trades

Program Structure 

Carpentry & Joinery/ Cabinet Making/ Automotive/ Boilermaking Trades

In your first weeks at the College you will commence your Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) program, and take part in a ‘Pre-apprenticeship’ program in the trade of your choice.

This program is designed to ensure that you have the skills you need to successfully secure employment. Once you have demonstrated that you are employable you will work closely with ATC Group Training, who manage the employment and training of ATC WA students, to secure an employer and therefore a School-based Apprenticeship.

A School-Based Apprenticeship is a fantastic way for you to gain valuable work and life experiences, earn money and progress toward a Certificate III qualification during your high school education.

Most School-based Apprentices will undertake a rotation that requires them to spend five consecutive weeks with their employer and five consecutive weeks at the College undertaking their off-the-job training and Year 12 studies. Workplace rotations will be paid.

Students who successfully complete the ATC WA program may graduate with:

  • Western Australian Certificate of Education (Year 12 Graduation)
  • A Certificate II qualification in their chosen trade
  • Competencies of their Certificate III qualification completed (formal trade qualification

Electrical Trade

ATC WA Electrical students undertake a pre-apprenticeship program (Certificate II in Electrotechnology) in their first year at the College (Year 11).

A pre-apprenticeship requires a student to undertake 200 hours of work experience to achieve their Certificate II qualification. ATC WA students will have the opportunity to complete this in their first year (Year 11).

Once a student has successfully completed year 11 and their pre-apprenticeship they will transition into a School-based Apprenticeship and commence trade training at a Certificate III level.

Students who successfully complete ATC WA program may graduate with:

  • Western Australian Certificate of Education (Year 12 Graduation)
  • Pre-apprenticeship in Electrotechnology (Certificate II)
  • Competencies of their Certificate III qualification completed    (formal trade qualification)

 Application Process

  1. Download and complete application of entry form and return to ATC WA with your most recent School reports & CV. You will also need to pay a $100 application fee (see College Fees)
  2. Sit a scheduled aptitude assessment at the College - This assessment measures numeracy, literacy and mechanical reasoning abilities. This is NOT a pass/ fails assessment, it exists so we can ensure that your academic abilities are suited to the trade you wish you apply for.
  3. Attend an interview with an ATC WA staff member - This part of the application process exists to simulate applying for a job and helps us determine your motivation and commitment to your chosen trade
  4. Letter will be sent notifying you of the outcome

External Program

External Traineeship opportunities also exist (for all trades except Electrical) for students who wish to remain enrolled in their current school.
