Australian School Based Apprenticeships
What is an Australian School-based Apprenticeship'
An Australian School-based Apprenticeship is a combination of vocational education and training and paid employment where a student’s school studies, training and work all fit together.
Young people can get a vocational education and training (VET) qualification and credit towards their senior secondary certificate. It gives them a head-start on their career path and an important link to the world of work.
What’s involved'
You have a choice of employing an Australian School-based Apprentice directly or through a Group Training Organisation (GTO). Training is co-ordinated by the College and will include a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) managed by Stirling Skills Training Inc.
The Australian Technical College will help you to set up the Australian Apprentice’s training programme. Australian School-based Apprenticeships training and employment can be flexible depending on your business needs.
We will work flexibly with employers to determine the right work-release pattern. This could be:
After an intensive period of 5 months in the college, preparing students with employability and basic trade skills, a 5 five week work release rotation between two students - essentially giving you a full time equivalent apprentice for the next 18 months.
A one week per month on-the-job work-release or a 3 week per quarter work-release may suit your needs.
An Australian School-based Apprenticeship typically takes 18-24 months to complete with a minimum of 8 hours in the workplace and 3 hours ‘off the job’ training per week (or averaged equivalent over the period).
What incentives are there'
You may be eligible to receive financial support for employing an Australian School-based Apprentice through government-funded incentives.
Contact your Australian Technical College for further information on incentive payments or More information on Employer Incentives can be found here on the apprenticeships website
